Getting the Word Across
Getting the Word Across, 2019, Acrylic on paper
This banner in four parts was originally constructed for a performative action conceived between The Broadcast participants and artist Kirsten Leenaars. However, it was then altered and reused for another action during the summer camp, and in the end the banners were transformed seven times over. Their various deployments can be seen in one of the main video projections on view in this gallery, while they also hang here as performative objects, confronting visitors upon entry to this second gallery space. To make this final iteration, the artist layers words from one message onto another, transferring words across the banners. In relation to the videos on display, this can be read as a form of montage or editing, akin to video editing techniques, while also allowing words and meanings to more freely associate.
